| 2012-08-12 Juan. | YBRzYlxceDFTHw | There's a lot to like about this TV. First is the price I got mine at Costco for significantly less than any of the prceis listed here (1/2009). The picture just seems more detailed than my last set. Shadow detail is quite good, ie it has a proper gamma, which is important and not the same as contrast. The tuner seems to work well, picking up stations that my last TV got with spotty reception at best. The aspect ratio controls are very useful, especially for 4:3 content; you can have letterbox bars, or the smart zoom fills the whole screen without much image distortion. I also find them useful for HD channels as well sometimes a letterboxed 4:3 image is shown with sidebars, resulting in a tiny version of a widescreen image, but the zoom setting takes care of that.Perhaps my favorite aspect of this TV was the very easy setup. Just choose the movie preset, then in a dark room, turn the backlight all the way down and adjust the contrast and brightness with a test disc (THX optimizer). Then, turn on the automatic backlight control and the screen is always at a proper brightness. I find it works extremely well, so well that I don't notice it the set is always just a comfortable brightness. A great way to save power while getting good image quality.The screen's anti-glare surface works well even in a brightly lit room. This was a problem with a plasma set that I tried out right before buying this one.I found that Review TopTen's recommended settings produced a noticeably too-red picture, and I think the movie preset is more natural looking. Maybe the firmware changed, or maybe I just like a different color setting than the Review TopTen guys.The are only two weaknesses that I see. 1) The black level is not super dark. It's really only noticeable in letterbox bars, as a scene with any sort of brightness saturates the eye to the point that I can't see any light from the dark portions. 2) The off angle performance isn't great. This mainly shows up as a brightening of the black level; colors look fine even from wide angles. But when I sit 9 feet away, if I am level with the left side of the screen, I can see that the right side is noticeably brighter (the black portions, that is). That's not a very big angle, so I was surprised that it made such a noticeable difference. Again, this mainly affects letterbox bars.A note on motion resolution: even though this set scored only 300 lines, I cannot detect any sort of motion blur or image ghosting, even with scrolling text during a sports show. My guess is that motion blur is a function of the human eye, and it affects some more than others. |
